{"id":5,"date":"2011-12-25T22:24:05","date_gmt":"2011-12-25T22:24:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kathypickles.co.uk\/home\/?page_id=5"},"modified":"2020-06-08T20:39:38","modified_gmt":"2020-06-08T19:39:38","slug":"biography","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/kathypickles.co.uk\/home\/?page_id=5","title":{"rendered":"About"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Kathy Pickles was born and brought up in London. &nbsp;After a Foundation Course at Canterbury College of Art and a short time studying textile design at Winchester School of Art, she went to Sussex University where she gained a degree in the History of Art.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Kathy moved to Orkney in January 1981 and soon afterwards started to develop her interest in painting flowers. Over the next few years she exhibited her work locally and undertook a number of private commissions. &nbsp;In 1988 she had her first solo exhibition and since then has had a number of successful shows in Orkney including a two-person show (with Dave Harris) at the Pier Arts Centre in 2001, entitled &#8216;Natural Studies&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1991 Kathy was encouraged by a visitor to one of her shows &nbsp;to &nbsp;apply to exhibit her work at one of the Royal Horticultural Society&#8217;s Flower Shows in Westminster. &nbsp;She did so and &nbsp;was delighted to receive a Gold Medal.&nbsp; She exhibited a further four times in the 1990s,&nbsp; receiving a Gold Medal on each occasion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As a result of her RHS exhibits Kathy was invited to participate in a three-person show at the Kew Gardens Gallery, which took place in 1995-6.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1996 Kathy undertook the design of the 1997 Chelsea Flower Show Plate which celebrated the Golden Wedding Anniversary of Her Majesty the Queen and Prince Philip. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since 1994 Kathy has been designing floral mugs for Dunoon Ceramics and to date has produced over two hundred designs.&nbsp; She was very pleased, a few years &nbsp;years ago, to be able to design of set of three Scottish Wild Flower mugs which included some Orkney favourites such as <em>Primula scotica<\/em>, Northern Marsh Orchid, Yellow Flag Iris <em>(Iris pseudacorus<\/em>) and Oyster Plant (<em>Mertensia maritima<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In February 2015 Kathy exhibited with the RHS for a sixth time and was awarded a Gold Medal for her watercolour paintings of <em>Fritillaria<\/em> and <em>Helleborus<\/em>.&nbsp; In February 2017 Kathy exhibited with the RHS for a seventh time and was awarded a Gold Medal for her watercolour paintings of <em>Clematis.&nbsp; <\/em>Some of these&nbsp; paintings can&nbsp; be seen on this website.<\/p>\n<p>In&nbsp; 2018 Kathy had two of her paintings included in the Scottish contribution to the Botanical Art Worldwide exhibition &#8211; &#8220;Flora Scotia&#8221;, held at the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Examples of Kathy&#8217;s work have been acquired by the Royal Horticultural Society, the Royal Botanic Gardens of Kew and Edinburgh, the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation in Pittsburgh and the Shirley Sherwood Collection. &nbsp;In 2010 her study of <em>Mertensia maritima<\/em> was one of the paintings of endangered species included in the special 250th anniversary edition of Curtis&#8217;s Botanical Magazine.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; Kathy&#8217;s paintings have been included in the following recent publications:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&nbsp;<em>&#8220;Scottish Plant Lore: an Illustrated Flora&#8221;<\/em> by Dr Greg Kenicer of RBGE (2018)<\/li>\n<li><em>&#8220;RHS Botanical Illustration: The Gold Medal Winners&#8221;<\/em><span data-ved=\"2ahUKEwjkhN7Q-vLpAhWRRhUIHWlZCEkQ2kooAjAUegQIEhAO\"> by Charlotte Brooks (2019)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><em>&#8220;Just Draw Botanicals&#8221;<\/em> by Helen Birch (2020)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kathy Pickles was born and brought up in London. &nbsp;After a Foundation Course at Canterbury College of Art and a short time studying textile design at Winchester School of Art, she went to Sussex University where she gained a degree<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-5","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/kathypickles.co.uk\/home\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages\/5","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/kathypickles.co.uk\/home\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/kathypickles.co.uk\/home\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/kathypickles.co.uk\/home\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/kathypickles.co.uk\/home\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=5"}],"version-history":[{"count":9,"href":"https:\/\/kathypickles.co.uk\/home\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages\/5\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":1401,"href":"https:\/\/kathypickles.co.uk\/home\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages\/5\/revisions\/1401"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/kathypickles.co.uk\/home\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=5"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
